Programme design
One platform, not seven events: designing a nationwide SME roadshow that converts

- A roadshow is a series of sales events. A platform is a reason for your market to gather, again and again.
- Build it on one ownable theme with two pillars: what owners want, and what they can't ignore.
- Measure decision-makers in the room, not just registrations.
Large organisations in Malaysia (banks, insurers, telcos, platforms) regularly run SME roadshows across several cities. Most follow the same script: hotel ballroom, product presentation, a panel, lunch. Attendance is uneven, the sales team chases cold leads, and next year it starts again from scratch.
There's a better way to spend the same budget.
From roadshow to platform
The shift is simple to describe: stop running seven events and build one national platform that happens to visit seven cities. One name, one theme, one identity. Each city builds on the last, with stories, photos and proof travelling ahead of the programme.
Choose one ownable theme with two pillars
The best themes combine something owners want with something they can't ignore:
- A growth pillar: new customers, new markets, better tools, the next stage of the business.
- A pressure pillar: a change owners must respond to, such as new compliance rules, rising costs or shifting customer behaviour.
The growth pillar attracts ambitious owners. The protection pillar adds urgency, a reason to come now. And the sponsor's product sits naturally inside the value, instead of interrupting it.
Curate the room, don't just fill it
Agree the target owner profile with the sponsor before a single invitation goes out: business size, industries, growth intent, role. A headcount is a vanity number. "Decision-makers who match our customer profile" is a business case.
A format owners actually enjoy
- A short sponsor session about how they help businesses grow, not a product pitch
- A respected local business hero sharing real lessons
- A moderated panel on the theme, with Q&A
- Structured networking that connects owners with each other and with the sponsor's team
- Time for real conversations over good refreshments
Each city should create the credibility and content for the next.
Measure what matters
Separate what the programme partner is accountable for (qualified registrations, attendance, decision-maker mix, engagement, content reach) from what the sponsor's sales team owns (follow-ups, applications, conversions). Clear lines make for honest reporting, and better programmes next year.
Frequently asked questions
How many SME owners should each city target?
For decision-maker programmes, 50 to 100 per city is usually the sweet spot: big enough for energy, small enough for real conversations.
Can co-sponsors join a bank or telco-led programme?
Yes. A two-pillar theme naturally creates room for complementary partners, which widens reach and shares cost, provided they serve the same audience without competing with the main sponsor.
Planning a multi-city programme? I'd be glad to share how I'd design it.
